Granular and Particle-Laden Flows

This research programme at the Newton Institute was devoted to improving the understanding and mathematical modelling of granular and particle-laden fluid systems as they arise in nature, in the laboratory and in industry. Geophysical examples of granular and particle-laden flows include rock avalanches, debris flows, mud flows and turbulent boundary layers with suspended particles, such as vol...

A synthesis of fluid and thermal transport models for metal foam heat exchangers

Metal foam heat exchangers have considerable advantages in thermal management and heat recovery over several commercially available heat exchangers. In this work, the effects of micro structural metal foam properties, such as porosity, pore and fiber diameters, tortuosity, pore density, and relative density, on the heat exchanger performance are discussed. The pertinent correlations in the lite...

A tightly coupled particle–fluid model for DNA-laden flows in complex microscale geometries

We present a stable and convergent method for the computation of flows of DNA-laden fluids in microchannels with complex geometry. The numerical strategy combines a ball–rod model representation for polymers coupled tightly with a projection method for incompressible viscous flow. We use Cartesian grid embedded boundary methods to discretize the fluid equations in the presence of complex domain...

Saddle-splay modulus of a particle-laden fluid interface

The scaled-particle theory equation of state for the two-dimensional hard-disk fluid on a curved surface is proposed and used to determine the saddle-splay modulus of a particle-laden fluid interface. The resulting contribution to saddle-splay modulus, which is caused by thermal motion of the adsorbed particles, is comparable in magnitude with the saddlesplay modulus of a simple fluid interface.

Direct Numerical Simulation of Particle-Laden Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulent Flows Using a Two-Fluid Model Formulation

Abstract A DNS approach for Eulerian-Eulerian dispersed particles simulation is presented in which a stress term corresponding to the uncorrelated motion of dispersed particles is identified. Two models for this stress terms are proposed. The first model uses an isentropic approximation that relates the local amount of uncorrelated particle kinetic energy to the particle number density. The sec...
